As members of MOMS, you’re well aware of the adverse health effects associated with many chemicals. Like me, you believe that our milk – of all things - shouldn’t be polluted. You believe that babies shouldn’t be born with industrial chemicals in their brand new bodies. And to turn these visions into reality, you’re probably interested in seeing some effective policy change. So what do you say we do it? We make that happen? We, the moms, the breastfeeders, the activist citizens? We are exactly who can make policy change happen.
How can we help? We can raise our voices together, each in our own way and in our own place, to support the Kid Safe Chemicals Act. Kid-Safe was written to overhaul the existing federal law that regulates industrial chemicals (like bisphenol-A, phthalates, and mercury – to name but a very few). It establishes a system that ensures these chemicals are safe before they hit the shelves, not after. It prioritizes the chemicals we’re seeing in infants and in breast milk, and emphasizes that chemicals must be safe for the most vulnerable among us - pregnant women, infants and children. Want to learn more? There’s loads of user-friendly information on EWG’s Kid-Safe site, like fact sheets, videos, and the bill language (if you’re the wonky type).
What can you do RIGHT NOW?
- You can sign The Declaration. It’s short but powerful: Pre-polluted children. It's morally wrong. Tell our elected officials in Washington, D.C. It is morally wrong that kids are born pre-polluted with hundreds of toxic industrial chemicals. Protect our children by supporting the Kid-Safe Chemicals Act.
- You can spread the word. Share this newsletter with friends and family. Blog about the Kid Safe Chemicals Act, and include a link to The Declaration.
- You can watch “10 Americans,” EWG’s 22-minute video about industrial chemicals in cord blood, including why low-dose toxic exposures matter and how Kid Safe can help. And you can embed it on your blog, too.
- You can send a letter to your U.S. Senators and Representatives in Congress, asking them to support Kid-Safe because you are tired of waiting. Better yet? Call. Even better? Make a personal visit. Whatever makes you comfortable. Need text? Phone numbers? Scripts? We’re happy to support your efforts. Contact lisa@ewg.org. She’s a mom who thinks toxic chemicals have no place in the marketplace, too.
- You can host a Kid-Safe house party. Your role? Pick a time and invite 10 friends. Our job? We’ll get you the “10 Americans” DVD, some terrific written materials, and on-the-spot action opportunities for your guests. And all the support you need.
Like all significant legislation, this bill won’t pass overnight. Our work will take time, but with patience and the power of many, we’ll get there. So stay tuned. Jump in. We’ll need all hands on deck – the moms of MOMS chief among them.
