Let's face it, moms—heck parents in general— are a busy bunch. We shouldn't have to worry about whether the products we buy are safe, but we do. Why? Because there is growing evidence that everyday consumer products we buy for our homes and families are tainted with chemicals that cause birth defects, reproductive, developmental, and behavioral harm, and even cancer. It's an outrage. And we want to do something about it.
We are working to build a massive movement of mothers and others who will step out from behind the changing table and speak out against the presence of toxins in our environment, our bodies, and breast milk.
Our group was founded by nursing mothers after we discovered that the chemical perchlorate—a component of rocket fuel—was present in mother's milk. You don't have to be a current or former breastfeeding mom to join our network. The only requirement is that you share a desire to help children reach their full potential by eliminating the environmental hazards that surround them.
Promote Precaution
"Better safe, than sorry". It might seem like an old-fashioned idea, one repeated by mothers the world over. In today's toxic world, it still seems like great advice. The Precautionary Principle embodies the sentiment of this old phrase. It's the idea that if a chemical is suspected of causing harm, even if all of the science isn't in, we should treat it as if it will cause harm, and use safer alternatives wherever possible.
Support Progressive Legislation
The simple truth is that our current regulatory system is broken. Children continue to be poisioned by lead; workers are being exposed to radiation and chemicals on the job; and our bodies have become a dumping ground for industrial wastes. We need new and more effective laws to ensure a safer future for our children and grandchildren.
Change Corporate Behavior
Through vocal direct actions, postcard campaigns, and MOMSquad inspections, MOMS works to persuade companies to adopt purchasing policies that ensure the products they sell are safe.
Educate Consumers
MOMS conducts outreach to pregnant women, new moms, and their families to inform them of the health effects to children from exposure to chemicals before, during, and after pregnancy. We also provide information about safer alternatives for products ranging from cleaning supplies and food storage containers, to personal care products and home furnishings.
